The Transfiguration

The Transfiguration
15th Century Novgorod
When the Monastery of St. Catherine was built in the 6th century the first known representation of the Transfiguration appeared in the apse. Its composition was so perfect that it would never be substantially changed. The basic structure consists of a large circle expanding as it becomes lighter. This is placed over a triangle which is outlined by the rays of light issuing from the circle’s axis which is formed by the white figure of Christ.
The mountaintop is the meeting place between heaven and earth. Christ is the mediator between God and humanity. Elijah and Moses are present communing with Him. The disciples fall away in fear and trepidation. James and John cover their faces and cannot look. Peter, however, not only looks but holds up his hand as though referring us to Jesus the Messiah. It is his realisation that made Jesus call him “ the rock upon which I will build my Church”.
